Name: Devon Friend

Player or Coach: Player and coach

Date of Birth: 11/07/1991

About:

I started playing hockey in grade 8 (many years ago) and fell in love with the sport from day one. I'm currently a club player and have played for Amathole/Border Men's, but my real passion lies in the development and coaching of players. I have coached u16A and u16B Boys Amathole/Border Schools sides, as well as various Boys and Girls East London Jaguar indoor hockey teams at PSI. I was the Head of Hockey and First Girls' XI coach at Lilyfontein School, I also had the opportunity to coach a local Mens premier league hockey team in East London; I have since moved to Cambridge High School where I coach the u14A Boys hockey team.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Sports Psychology and have used this qualification in assisting various students and athletes to reach their potential in their respective fields through counselling and mental toughness training.

Currently:

I am currently a Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy teacher at Cambridge High School in East London. I also coach u14A Boys Hockey and u15A Boys Cricket.

Stick:

Elite X-2 Dyneema

Career Highlight:

I have had so many highlights of my career, one of my favourite experiences is coaching the u16B Amathole/Border Boys team in 2018 at the u16 South Regional Tournament that was held in Bloemfontein. I have never coached a team so willing to give their all for the game and for their team members. They were an incredible example of how coming together to achieve a common goal is possible, regardless of how hard the circumstances might be. Their attitude and dedication to the team were inspirational and through hard work and commitment they were able to win gold that year.
